报告内容简介:In this talk, I will present a case study from mathematical neuroscience, and analyze it with the method of activity-based analysis, i.e., by focusing on roles of the relevant scientific activities, agents, criteria of success, goals, and other relevant factors. The goal is to use this method to identify the relevant epistemic patterns embodied by the scientific practices in the case study. I then employ Chang’s notion of epistemic iteration to articulate the identified epistemic patterns further. Finally, I will argue that using the notion of epistemic iteration to understand the case study is better than using notions of scientific explanation.
报告人简介:严如玉,约翰霍普金斯大学哲学博士,台湾阳明大学心智哲学研究所助理教授。近五年来专注的研究领域为科学实践中的哲学(philosophy of science in practice),此研究领域著重探讨科学实践(scientific practice)的知识论、形上学、伦理学与政治哲学等议题。
