Yang Guorong was born in October 1957, in Zhuji, Zhejiang Province. He was professor of Philosophy, deputy director of the Academic Committee, dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and director of the Institute of Modern Thought and Culture in China at East China Normal University, Yangtze Scholar of the Ministry of Education, member of the 5th and 6th Philosophical Review Group of the Degree Committee of the State Council.

He received his Ph.D. in 1988 and has taught in Philosophy Department of East China Normal University since January 1988. In May 1991, he was promoted to professor from a lecturer. From 1994 to 1995, he did his academic research at the University of Oxford.
From 1999 to 2000 and the year 2002, he did academic research at Harvard University. From 2006 to 2007, he was a Fulbright scholar at Stanford University. In 1992, he was assistant to the director of philosophy department of East China Normal University, and from 1998 to 2000, he was promoted to dean of the philosophy department. Since 2000, he has been the director of the Institute of Chinese Modern Thought and Culture, which is a key research base in the humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education. From 2008 to 2012, he was the first dean of Si-Mian Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities, ECNU. From 2012 to the present, he was dean of School of Humanities and Social Sciences, ECNU. Since May, 2013, he is deputy director of the Academic Committee of ECNU.

He has Published more than 10 academic works in the fields of philosophy of the pre-Qin, Song-Ming neo-confucianism, modern Chinese philosophy, moral philosophy, Metaphysics, etc. His main works written before 2009 were included in TheCollection of Yang Guorong (11 pieces), while several works published from 2010 to 2018 were not included in this collection. Ten of the works have been published overseas, and a variety of books have been translated into English, German, French, Korean, and published by Indian University Press, Brill and other publishing houses. In addition, he has published more than 150 academic papers in domestic and international academic journals, such as Social Sciences in China,Philosophy: East and West, Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy, Journal of Chinese Philosophy etc. In 2012, the international academic journal Contemporary Chinese Thought (Summer 2012, Vol. 43 No. 04) which is published in the United States published Special Issue to introduce and outline philosophy with the name Yang Guorong's Concrete Metaphysics.
